Colleen VanZandt Obituary

Colleen Cain (Hevrin) VanZandt passed away on March 8, 2022, in Holbrook, Arizona.  She was born on November 29, 1928, in rural Chana, Illinois, to Lester and Leola (Beaman) Cain.  They moved to rural Byron, Illinois, in 1932.  Colleen attended first grade at Whitacker School and then moved to the city of Byron where she attended Byron Schools and graduated in 1947.  She married Marvin Hevrin in June, 1947.  They were married for 26 years.

Colleen married John VanZandt in August of 1974.  He passed away in September of 1987.  Colleen worked at the Byron Post Office for 32 ½ years and retired in May 1988.  She was a member of the United Church of Byron all her life.  She sang in the church choir and was treasurer of the Memorial Committee and the Sarah Circle for many years.  She joined the Women of the Moose in Mt. Morris in 1985 and earned her Academy of Friendship, College of Regents, and Star Recorder degrees.  She also worked in the dining room as a waitress and cashier for many years.  She cooked burgers on Tuesday nights and was chairman of the funeral committee.

Colleen moved to Holbrook, Arizona to live with her daughter, Kelli, in 2010.  She is survived by her two daughters, Wendy Drew and Kelli Stemp, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, sister-in-law, Mary Cain, and her special little buddy, Chico Diablo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Robin Doan (2009); sister, Evelyn Peterson, and three brothers, Delos, Gaylen, and Allan Cain.
