Herbert Lawrence Burgess, age 86, of Taylor, AZ, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2023, from natural causes, shortly after taking a trip down the Mississippi River with his wife Helga. He and Helga were best friends. They enjoyed traveling and went on many trips in their motorhome. They carried the beauty of the land in their hearts and memories.
Herbert was born to John Albert and Opal Victoria Burgess in Marietta, Georgia on December 18, 1937. It was there in Georgia that he met and married Helga. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Herbert was a talented wood craftsman. He and his wife had a “toy room” where they spent a lot of time together. He would build detailed model sailboats and she would paint. Herbert also loved restoring cars and building amazing model train sets. His love of life came through every day with his infectious laugh and smile. Herb could make a friend out of a total stranger. His love of life came through every day, he will be deeply missed. Herbert had over a 30-year career in the aircraft industry working for Lockheed Martin and Allied Signal, where he worked as a technical illustrator.
Herbert and Helga served in the Snowflake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints for 10 years. Herbert served honorably in the US Navy for 4 years and served on an Aircraft Carrier. He enjoyed decorating his home with many small boats and ships, influenced by that time of his life.
Herbert is survived by his wife and companion in life of 54 years, Helga Burgess. Herbert had two children Steven and Cindy, 4 grandchildren, Tyler, Brittany, Kristina and Ryan, six great grandchildren, Avery, Saylor, Hadley, Ellie, Ezra and River.
There will be a Funeral service on Friday, April 28th at 10:00am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Centennial Chapel in Taylor, AZ. A viewing will be held prior to the service, beginning at 9:00am. Interment will follow at the Reed Hatch Memorial Cemetery.
