Joan Randall Shumway Turley Obituary
Joan Randall Shumway Turley, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, following eight months of compassionate hospice care. She was 85 years old.
Joan was born on February 28, 1941, in San Diego, California. In 1948, her family moved to Joseph City, Arizona, where she was raised in a ranching family. She developed a lifelong love for riding horses and the outdoors, a heritage she shared with her father and grandfather.
After graduating from Holbrook High School in 1959, she married E. Drew Shumway. Together, they built a life rooted in faith and hard work on their own cattle ranch. Following Drew’s passing in 2006, Joan eventually found companionship again with Frank L. Turley. They were married in 2018 and shared eight happy years together. Frank cared for her devotedly until she entered assisted living, where her daughters continued her care.
A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joan served faithfully in many capacities, including the Relief Society and Young Women organization. She was also a gifted artist and poet, frequently drawing inspiration from her faith and the beauty of the world. She was proud of her pioneer heritage and dedicated much of her time to genealogy and temple service.
Joan is survived by her husband, Frank L. Turley; her nine children: Ann (Aaron) Manwill, Marilyn (Brad) Mitchell, Beth (Scott) Self, David (Debbie) Shumway, Raymond (Laura) Shumway, Nancy (Danny) Davis, Julie (Clint) Allred, Susan (Royce) Munroe, and Amanda (Ben) Mitsuda; 47 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Fred Randall, Nick Randall, and Peggy Hancock.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Fay Randall, and her first husband, E. Drew Shumway.
Funeral services will be held on May 2nd at 11:00 AM with a visitation starting at 9:30, at the Holbrook Arizona Stake Center. A Gravesides Service, will follow a family luncheon, at the Taylor Arizona Cemetery.
