Roy Anthony DeFrance, a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and decorated veteran, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Show Low, Arizona, at the age of 91. Born on June 27, 1934, in Phoenix, Arizona, to the late Melvin ”Dee” and Valle DeFrance, he is survived by his daughters, Debbie West, Catherine DeFrance, Laurie Durnil, and Mary Candelaria; his sons, Matthew and Michael DeFrance; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Before starting his family, Roy honorably served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Cunningham during the Korean War. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifices during actions that occurred on September 19, 1952. After his service, Roy built a distinguished 35-year career at Arizona Public Service (APS). His colleagues respected him for his work ethic, integrity, and commitment to excellence. Roy’s contributions to APS and his mentorship to many of its employees left an indelible mark on the company.
Those who knew and loved Roy are left with a mix of emotions at his passing, particularly a longing for closer connections. Roy was a man who lived by a strong work ethic, a value he once attributed to his deep responsibility to provide for his children.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Melvin “Dee” and Valle DeFrance, wife Nancy DeFrance, his daughters, Dawn Pike and Tamara Mason, granddaughter Jordan Roper and grandson Steven West.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Cathy Finch for the care she provided to Roy in the last five years of his life.
