Velma “Anne” Powell, 90 of Snowflake, Arizona was welcomed into the presence of her Lord on Sunday, August 11, 2024. She was born in Lamar, Colorado on February 27, 1934. She was the 2nd of 9 children to Leonard H. Johnson and Opal Johnson.
Anne attended school in Martinez, California and in McClave, Colorado area until 1952. After graduating high school, she worked for the Telephone Company as PBX Operator in Lamar, Colorado. She met John D. Powell in July of 1952 and married on October 19, 1952. Anne and John then began their family together. She then moved to the L.A. area with her family in 1956. She was a house wife until all of her children were in high school.
Anne was very involved with Puente Hills Baptist Church, where she served beside her husband John, the Director of Deaf Ministries for over 30 years. Anne worked at Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College in California as a Deaf Instructor.
Anne was the epidemy of the virtuous women in Proverbs 31 of the Bible and was a vigilant prayer warrior. She was a strong believer in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ and was a member of Valley View Baptist Church in Snowflake, Arizona.
Anne enjoyed playing golf up until a few years ago. She was tickled by her hole in one at Arcadia Park Golf Course in California. She had a standing monthly Uno card game with her best friends in California. She loved playing different games especially Okinawa Gin, Uno, Dominoes, and putting together puzzles with family. Anne’s favorite T.V. game shows were The Price Is Right and Jeopardy (she was fantastic at Jeopardy). She loved her garden in California and the birds that would visit throughout the year.
Anne loved to bake zucchini bread (zucchini from her garden), and her staple chocolate cake cookies and rice crispy treats which her children, grandchildren, great grands, other family and friends would rave about.
When Anne met people for the first time you could hear her say “Hello, my name is Anne, Anne with an “e”.
Velma Anne is survived by her sons, John W. “Bill” (Anita), Leonard “Scott” (Yvonne), Robert “Bob” Dale (Tammi) and their families, which include two grandsons, Robert, and Ben, seven granddaughters, Jessica (Samuel), Rachel (Joshua), Leslie (Andrew), Beth (Jeremy), Bobbi, Bridget and Evelyn. Eight great grandchildren Sydney, Jack, Luke, Nate, Isabella, Rebekah, Madden, and Peyton, (A grandson Stephen preceded her in death.) and her brother, Roger Dean Johnson (Alice) of Florence, Kansas.
A viewing will be conducted at Silver Creek Mortuary, Taylor Arizona on Monday, August 19, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
A Celebration of Anne's life will be held at Silver Creek Mortuary, Taylor, Arizona on Monday 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Elder, Melvin Fowler officiating.
Anne will be greatly missed by the many, whose lives she has touched!
